Tips: Useful Anti-Spam Filters for Microsoft Outlook

Useful Anti-Spam Filters for Microsoft Outlook

Spam mails are so annoying that it can lead to email account hacking, malware attack, and phishing. Microsoft Outlook is a popular email client application for handling multiple email accounts and this is the reason it is prone to spam mails.

The developers are using EOP anti-spam and anti-phishing technology to prevent the spam and junk mails on the Outlook. The useful Anti-Spam filters for Microsoft Outlook are discussed below.

1. Connection Filter

  1. This Anti-Spam filter helps to figure out the good and bad email sources (servers) of all the incoming emails at the start itself.
  2. It checks the IP Block List, IP Allow List, and Safe list to refine the incoming emails on Outlook.
  3. Change the connection filtering policies under Anti-spam settings on the Outlook settings and set the filtering actions, such that you do not face trouble while receiving normal emails.
  4. Users can configure the IP Block list and IP Allow list, whereas the Safe list is available in the Microsoft datacenter, and the Outlook users can only enable or disable this filter. Users cannot make any configuration changes to the Safe list.

2. Content filter or Spam filter

  • When the Spam filter identifies a spam mail, it categorizes it under any of the spam categories mentioned here.
  • The spam categories are Spam, High confidence spam, Bulk email, High confidence phishing email, and Phishing email.
  • Besides that, the spam emails are sent to the Junk folder in Outlook.
  • You can configure the action to be performed by the Spam filter by accessing the ‘Configure standalone EOP to deliver spam to the Junk Email folder in hybrid environments’ page.

3. Outbound spam filter

  • Outlook also makes sure that the users do not send spam emails to other email addresses.
  • If you want to change the Outbound Spam Filter policy, configure the default outbound filter policy in the Security & Compliance Center.
  • Customize the outbound spam policies to hold strict filtering on Outlook.
  • You can limit the maximum number of emails you send. You can also include different sending patterns and enable the alert message indicating the user restriction.

4. Spoof Intelligence

  1. Outlook uses the Spoof intelligence filter to allow or block any email. Users can configure this filter in the Anti-Spam settings page.
  2. The spoofed emails by genuine senders do not get blocked any more on Outlook and also protects the user account.
  3. The repeating pattern of the inbound emails can also be original email messages. Thus, users must manage the spoof intelligence to ensure that the legitimate emails are received on the email account.
